Cheng Fei Defends Her Thesis

Cheng Fei showed up at her thesis defense today wearing a hat and track suits; although I do not agree with this unprofessional attire, I heard it’s the norm at Wuhan Institute of Physical Education.  Her master degree thesis is titled “Innovation and Practice of the Cheng Fei Vault”.  Congrats to Cheng Fei on passing =)

Cheng Fei Job Change

Former Olympic Champion Cheng Fei has left the National Team and returned to her home province of Hubei.  She is currently coaching at Wuhan Institute of Physical Education, the place where she used to train.

At present, the Wuhan Institute of Physical Education’s gymnastics school has about 50 students. Sources say Cheng Fei may serve as the principal of the gymnastics school there and have the gymnastics school named after her. Wuhan Institute of Physical Education is considering giving her the Associate Professor title and benefits.

Cheng Fei’s transfer come as no surprise to most of her fans.  She has expressed how she doesn’t feel at home living the Beijing metropolitan life in the past.  Going back home and coaching her home team seems the most logical choice for her.  Wish you best of luck Feifei! ^_^

Coach Cheng Fei

Cheng Fei showed up at the 2013 Nationals as a coach for the first time. With her help, Hubei provincial team has successfully qualified in 6th place for the National Games in September.  Best wishes to Cheng Fei for her coaching career.

Cheng Fei Transitioning from Athlete to Coach
According to this Chinese article, Cheng Fei is currently coaching a group of five young athletes on the National Team; two of them from her native Hubei Province.  Former Head Coach Lu Shan Zhen was the one who suggested coaching when he saw Cheng Fei idling while recovering from her torn Achilles.
When ask about being a coach, Cheng Fei jokes about how she gets frustrated whenever someone gets stuck on a simple skill and she just wanted to jump on and show them how it’s done.  “Being an athlete, one only has to think about his/her own problems, but being a coach is much different, you have think more comprehensively. Before, I was training with the elite gymnasts and have gotten used to the high skill level at that stage. I am adjusting to the young gymnasts at their skill level and their way of thinking”, she smiles, “I just want my gymnasts to do their best at the National Games”.
